When did May get here? I was so caught up in Spring finally arriving that I almost forgot about the first Monday in May! Luckily, I have social media (and a roommate) for a friendly reminder. So I skipped my barre class, cracked open a bottle of rosé, and glued myself to all the Met Gala coverage.
I make this statement every year but this event really makes me feel some type of way. The space for creative interpretation is so vast and I am consumed by the stories that these designers are trying to tell through fashion.
The exhibit this year is titled “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”. If this was a Saturday Night Live skit, I’m sure we would see some different looks than the ones I have highlighted. Here are my favourite’s of the night:
Rihanna in Maison Margiela
Queen, queen, queen! And I’ll even call her the damn Pope after this ensemble. She is the top of my list for this event every year and she did it again. So it was about time they gave her a role as co-chair for this year’s Met Gala. Rihanna always makes a bold statement at the gala and she did not fall short with her hand beaded, pearl and crystal embellished gown.
Sarah Jessica Parker in Dolce & Gabanna
Now for my personal queen, SJP. Always one to make a statement at the Met Gala, she is the epitome of everything that is New York, and fashion (can you tell I’m a Sex and the City fan?). I love hats, toques, fascinators, headdresses of all sorts, and in this case a nativity scene. This gal does not deviate from the year’s theme and I’d say the proof is in the pudding. I apologize in advance to anyone’s Christmas party I get drunk at and try to put their nativity decorations on my head…
Blake Lively in Versace
How many times can I call someone my queen? Ugh, I just love her so much! And she also always dominates a red carpet. Oh my god, the details in this dress are unbelievable! I’ll just be here super zooming in on the dress for the rest of the night if you need me.
Katy Perry in Versace
I absolutely loved Katy Perry’s appearance at the Victoria’s Secret Fash… oh wait. Another celebrity who took the evening’s theme pretty literal. However, I have nothing but respect for anyone that can rock an accessory that spans almost 6 feet. I topple over in 6 inch heels.
Lena Waithe in Carolina Herrera
What do I love more than all of the looks above? A statement with meaning. The house of Herrera is known for stripes and they worked with Lena Waithe to create this cape that showcased their brand, the theme, and the personality of the wearer- brilliant.
This is a red carpet that hardly ever disappoints me. I will find appreciation in the thought that is put into these outfits and tonight is not an exception. Albeit, it could have been a lot more controversial, but that depends on your audience.
Happy First Monday in May! Enjoy your week everyone!
